show HillsburnMay 5 at 2:00 and 7:30

Hillsburn is an indie band from Halifax that has sold out The Loft on two previous visits. Their music is a mix of rock, folk and Americana and they bleed every last drop of themselves into each of their original songs. Their first album, In the Battle Years, was awarded the 2016 Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year and they were nominated in a slew of categories at the 2017 East Coast Music Awards, including Rising Star Recording of the Year, Group Recording of the Year, and Fans' Choice Video of the Year (which they won!).

Hillsburn released its second album, The Wilder Beyond, in February recently and are touring widely to promote the new songs. Their tour will swing them through Cobourg in early May just before heading off to the UK for the first time. Come out and to The Loft and give them a rousing send-off. We have two shows to accommodate their large and growing local following.

HILLSBURN MEMBERS

Paul Aarntzen - Songwriter, singer, guitar
Rosanna Burrill - Singer, violin
Clayton Burrill - Singer, guitar
Jackson Fairfax-Perry - Keyboard, Synthesizers, Saxophone, Mandolin

MAY 10 • 7:30pm

show SUTrioShari Ulrich - CFMA, 2014 Songwriter of The Year

Originally a California girl, long settled on the west coast of Canada, Shari Ulrich celebrates 43 years as a touring recording artist and multi-instrumentalist (violin, mandolin, piano, guitar, dulcimer, & harmonica). From Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band, and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist has lead to 23 albums – including her collaboration with solo artists Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and more recently The High Bar Gang, a 7 piece bluegrass band with Barney Bentall & Colin Nairne. Her work has garnered 2 Juno awards, several Juno nominations, an induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and a 2014 CFMA for English Songwriter of the Year. Shari charmed and wowed a full house at The Loft on March 2017. She's back and I'm very happy about that.

Shari will be accompanied by her daughter Julia Graff on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, accordion and vocals and fellow High Bar Gang member Kirby Barber on bass, guitar and vocals.

Shari Ulrich is a performing and recording legend who has distinguished herself as a multi-instrumentalist (violin, mandolin, piano, guitar, dulcimer, & harmonica) and a singer and songwriting phenomenon. Shari has put out 23 albums from PiedPumkinto the Hometown Band, to UHF (Ulrich, Henderson & Forbes) to BTU (Barney Bentall, Tom Taylor, Ulrich) and years as a solo artist too. She has won 2 Juno awards, been nominated for several other Junos, been inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame and named 2014 CFMA Songwriter of the Year. Shari charmed a full house at The Loft in March 2017. I'm glad she's back.

Tanya Davis & Catherine MacClellan - STEADY ON: A Night of Music and Words for Mental Health.

steady onI hardly ever get this excited for a gig at The Loft. I have been gently stalking Tanya Davis for 3 years now: "Come and play my Loft." Tenacity pays off! And bonus! Tanya is coming with giant singer/songwriter talent Catherine MacLellan 2015 Juno Roots Solo Album of the Year, 2015 CFMA Contemporary Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.

Tanya was Halifax Poet Laureate (2012), 2016 Artist in Residence, Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine. She's done 4 albums, 2 books and starred in and wrote the soundtrack for a film by Andrea Dorfman, (Heartbeats). A video of Tanya performing her poem 'How To Be Alone' has more than 8 million views on YouTube. Catherine and Tanya are two mighty big talents and they perform with an inspiring authenticity which is the bedrock of dealing with mental health issues. Rare entertainment, this one.
